Many of the jobs available in Asia will offer you free accommodation, particularly in China and Korea. Not having to pay for an apartment is a huge saving. In the USA and Europe a person between the age of 18-30 can be paying as much as 50% or more of their income on accommodation, particularly if you live in one of major cities like London or New York. If a person is paying over 50% on accommodation each month then that doesn’t leave much left over for leisure time.

The accommodation on offer to a TEFL Teacher varies from city to city. When I taught in South Korea the apartment was a large studio within walking distance of the town centre and shops. The school I worked in started at 3pm and finished at 8pm, which gave me most of the day and late evening and the weekends to explore Korea. It was an excellent experience.

You can save money when you TEFL by doing some private work to top-up your income. Many of the TEFL teachers I met used the money they earnt from private tuition to live on and saved their salaries. they could do this because the cost of living was so low compared to their home country. Some of them saved as much as $5000-$10000 per year. This allowed these TEFL Teachers to travel for 6 months when they had ended their contract and then sign another one 6 months later.
